Peterhead Health Centre began its flu clinics yesterday (Monday) and is encouraging local folk to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
Flu is an illness caused by a virus and for most people it is just a nasty experience.
But for some it can lead to more serious complications, such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
A health centre spokesperson explained: "As people get older they
become more vulnerable to these conditions. Because flu viruses are always changing, people need the new vaccine each year.
"This winter's flu virus will be slightly different from last winter's flu virus. NHS Scotland will therefore offer free flu vaccine to everyone aged 65 years and over on or before March 31, 2009."
If you are over 65 you are also entitled to a free vaccination against pneumococcal disease if you have not been already vaccinated.
Pneumococcus is a bacteria which can cause serious illness, including pneumonia and meningitis.
If you are under 65 you may be entitled to a free flu vaccination if you are in one of the following categories:
You suffer from Coronary Heart Disease, Diabetes Mellitus, Chronic Obstructive Airways Disease, Asthma, Chronic Renal Failure, Immunosuppression (Immune system disorder, if you are undergoing chemotherapy or do not have a spleen), Chronic Liver Disease, Stroke.
Also if you are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person, whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill, you will be entitled to a free flu vaccine.
To make an appointment call (01779) 474841 as soon as possible.
