PETERHEAD recovered from going 2-0 and then 3-1 behind to take a draw from an entertaining encounter on Sunday.
Following heavy rain over the weekend, the game was switched from the usual venue at Catto Park to the Links and it was the visitors who started the brighter of the teams, taking the game to Peterhead. With their defence holding strong, it was left t
o the Toon's Paul Duncan to try to make the most of an early shooting opportunity when the ball broke to him outside the area; he was unlucky to see his effort clear the crossbar.
Middlefield were controlling possession in these early stages and created a good chance down the left sending a cross which beat the Peterhead defence but ended up drifting harmlessly passed the far post and out of play.
As Middlefield continued to pressure the home defence, keeper Ryan Thomson was called into action pulling off a couple of vital saves and with the action continuing apace, play switched to the other end of the pitch with some neat interplay between Dean Donald and Philip Turriff ending in a Luke Smith header going wide.
The opening goal came as the first period drew to a close with Middlefield pouring forward and catching out the Peterhead defence with an impressive drive from the right wing; the attacker collecting the ball at the half-way line and dribbling into the box to slot the ball passed keeper Thomson.
Only a minute later it was 2-0 as the Wasps swarmed forward looking to extend their lead. A goal-bound shot struck last man, Neale Christie on the hand and the referee pointed to the spot. Thomson had little chance as the ball was confidently struck home to double the visitor's advantage.
Peterhead managed to pull a goal back just before the end of the 1st period when a freekick was awarded just outside the box. Liam Stephen stepped up to strike the ball high over the defensive wall and passed the keeper.
The second period saw Peterhead bolstered by their goal and looking for the equaliser. A strong kick out from Thomson was picked up on the right by Philip Turriff who took the ball to the goal line and sent in a cross for Calvin Donaldson to head just wide.
Buoyed by the chance, further attempts came from Adam Cross and Paul Duncan whose shots were high of the target. Midway through the second period, the Wasps restored their two-goal advantage when a mix-up in the Toon defence saw the Middlefield striker latch onto the ball and, with Thomson off his line, his was able to pick his spot and send a shot past the Toon keeper.
Peterhead continued to threaten with Ben Hastie pushing a shot wide but had keeper Thomson to thank for keeping the score at only 3-1 when he saved from a good chance made from some good Middlefield build-up play. But with only a minute left in the second period, the Toon were rewarded for their persistence when Calvin Donaldson volleyed in at the far post from a Luke Smith cross.
At 3-2 down going into the third and final period, it was the home team who looked the more likely to score, a Bruce Thain effort unlucky to go over the bar. It was midway through the final period that the equaliser eventually came. Adam Cross making a break down the left and sending a shot goal ward, the keeper could only parry the ball into the path of Ben Hastie who coolly slotted home to level things up with ten minutes to go.
Peterhead continued to push for a winner, Calvin Donaldson coming close with a shot just wide of the mark but the match was to end all square.
